Unearthing the rich 11,000-year human heritage of the Miami area

The pace of change of Miami since its incorporation in 1896 is staggering. The seaside land that once was home to several thousand Tequesta is now congested with roads and millions of people while skyscrapers and artificial lights dominate the landscape. Ironically, Miami’s development both continually erases monuments and traces of Indigenous people and historic pioneers yet also leads to the discovery of archaeological treasures that have lain undiscovered for centuries.

Digging Miami by Robert S. Carr Book Review

Title: Useful Resource

Review: This text was worth the purchase price, and contributed greatly to a better understanding of South Florida history. I wish there could have been some color plates, as some of the black and white were difficult to appreciate. The jargon was very academic, and since it has been 20 years since hearing my last lectures in archeology and physical anthropology I found myself having to go outside the text several times to refresh myself on some concepts. So, this is NOT a coffee table book!

Review: Very good book, well written and researched, has a lot of details so I skimmed over a lot of the technical parts and still learned much about the history of FL.

Review: First and foremost “Digging Miami” is the best one volume survey of the pre-history of South Florida, which is much older and more complex than many realize. The author, Bob Carr, who is the leading archaeologist in this area, traces the history using archaeology digs, most of which he personally conducted.

So we learn of the Cutler Fossil Site where 12,000 years ago Native Americans had a hearth in a cave on the ridge at the edge of a great, grassy savanna, which nurtured now-extinct mastodons, camels, horses, and wolves. With the rise of the oceans after that Ice-Age, that savanna became Biscayne Bay, one of the largest bays in the world.

We learn of the Miami Circle which was a ceremonial center of the ancient city of Tequesta, where the mouth of the Miami river meets Biscayne Bay, ground zero of modern Miami. The ancient Tequesta people built mounds, canals, and intricate and extensive cemeteries wedged into the crevices of the limestone which is the bedrock of South Florida.

Other sites revealed statuettes of the Virgin Mary, rosary beads, and metal buttons and bells that show the advent of the Spanish into Tequesta and the region. Other sites illustrate the British and Bahamian settlements. Still others teach us about the advance of different Creek Indian bands into South Florida. The military trail and the various forts tell of the conquest and settlement of the land by Americans.

In retelling the history, Carr provides some original and intriguing conclusions. He discusses and ultimately dismisses the many legends of Black Caesar, the African-American or Bahamian pirate who gave his name to Caesar’s creek, one of the main passes from South Biscayne Bay into the ocean.

Carr also posits, for the first time that I am aware of, that the Native Americans who attacked the Key Biscayne Lighthouse (the only lighthouse ever captured by Indians) and who massacred the settlers on Indian Key , were remnant Tequesta, not Seminoles. As with everything in the book, Carr carefully marshals his arguments and provides a fair explanation of opposing theories.

The writing is remarkably clear and colorful and makes for easy reading. Carr proves to be a knowing, insightful narrator.

Carr may well be the only archaeologist who has succeeded in building bridges to the two groups that seem to reflexively hate archaeology: Native Americans and developers. In the book, he mentions that he will often refrain from photographing Native American remains to honor the concerns of the Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes. He also views archaeology and preservation as something that can take place in tandem with the development of land by, for example, creative and thoughtful use of green space. He urges us to become “custodians and not just consumers of the land.”

The book is worth the price if only for the series of maps of the different eras which show the location of the major sites in relationship to the rivers and creeks that cut the Atlantic coastal ridge, the gentle ridge of highland rising no more than 20 feet that separates the Everglades from the Atlantic Ocean. For 12,000 years at least, topography was destiny.

All in all a book well worth the read for anyone who wants to understand who we are and where we live.

Title: What I dig about Digging Miami
Date: Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 7, 2013
Review: The first archaeologist of Miami-Dade County has penned his account of discovering the Miami Circle and other impressive pre-historic artifacts in the most urbanized part of Florida, and I blogged about it in “Notes from a Fish” at […]

The book does get a bit technical, but there are plenty of surprises to keep you turning the pages through the thicker parts. There are several black and white photos of artifacts but not many of the landscapes where they were found, and it definitely helps to have some background knowledge of South Florida. The author is a major authority if not THE authority on the topic.

Review: I’ve lived in the Miami area for over 30 years, and I was surprised about how much of our local history I didn’t know. The book is written for professional and armchair archaeologists and teachers (as a reference tool) as well as a narrative for history buffs and the curious. For example- I had no idea that prehistoric american lions and dire wolves once prowled in the coconut grove area! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who would like to know more about south Florida and it’s rich history.

Review: I have worked on a number of archaeological projects in the Miami area over the past decade. This book presents some of those excavations, as well as others, in a meaningful and balanced over view. I recommend this publication for anyone who has a vested interest in the history of the area.
