I’ve done a lot of negotiation via email with both clients and freelancers and making things clear and quick is good for business because it’s part of the job. That is, if a client is expecting you to be the expert who takes problems off their hands and solves them for money, then they want you to be clear about what you think the next steps are and to reduce the amount of time they spend on it themselves. Those two things:
- Make recommendations clear because you’re hired as the expert — but also showing flexibility by offering options. Often the best way is to list two other options while making it clear why you think the recommendation is better.
- Reduce the time both of you spend communicating while also ensuring as many questions are addressed as possible. Often when I’ve been on the hiring side of freelancing it’s because I’m swamped. If something isn’t resolved quickly I might not have time to reconnect until too late. Streamlined communications are a competitive advantage especially because it makes you more attractive to people who can spend more. They’ve got the money because they have too much work to handle.
