BZedge was created in the likeness of ZCash. But, it wasn’t a simple journey.

In the beginning there was ZEC……

ZCash, better known as ZEC, was a hugely anticipated privacy coin. Announced at Consensus ’16, the project cast zkSNarks technology into public discussion and fueled the already intense debate over the concept that people have the right to transact privately.

ZEC was hard coded to include a founders reward to help facilitate the development of the coin. Using the proof-of-work system, 20% of the mining reward was distributed to the founders for each block mined.

….and then ZEC begat ZCL…

The ZEC founders reward inspired an individual by the name of Rhett Creighton to create ZClassic (also known as ZCL), a new project forked from ZEC code base. Like ZCash, ZCL featured a maximum supply of 21 million coins and a number of additional changes to the ZEC protocol including the removal the founders reward.

…who begat BTCZ…

Although it is not very well known, BitcoinZ was born from ZClassic. A fork of the ZCL, BitcoinZ aspired to become a global cryptocurrency with sufficient supply to enable every individual in the world to own a coin. BitcoinZ was created utilizing the same algorithm as ZCL (Equihash) and featured a maximum supply of 21 billion coins.

In 2017, BTCZ upgraded their protocol and modified their Equihash algorithm in order to ensure that BTCZ could not be mined using ASICs, a specialized type of equipment designed to out perform other mining hardware technology. The resulting hard fork was carried out successfully as the community switched to the new protocol.

Coincidentally c-cex.com, a cryptocurrency exchange, inadvertently continued to maintain the old BTCZ chain. A few weeks passed as the chain continued to operate unnoticed by the community (with the exception of a small group of individuals who continued to mine the coin) or the exchange itself.

…who was the father of BZE.

After becoming aware of the chain, a small team of developers took over and BZE was thus born. The team introduced a number of changes in the code base. Like its father, BZE was outfitted with the latest upgrade to its Equihash algorithm to prevent ASIC mining. In addition, the developers coded the chain with a series of rapid block reward halvings, most of which are set to occur throughout 2019. As a result, the coin’s maximum supply was changed from 21 billion to just over 3 billion coins.

The focus of BZE is to create a cutting edge cryptocurrency with a complimentary ecosystem designed to enhance the value of the network. As of this writing, the team is currently working on the development of several BZE projects including the implementation of the Sapling Protocol (a brand new upgrade to the network developed by the ZCash team).
