Moms, if you don’t eat it…your kids won’t eat it!
Many moms wonder why their kids don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables! If you are one of those moms, check and see if you eat fruits and vegetables.
I grew up with a mother who does not like vegetables, she occasionally ate fruits but it was not necessary in the household. My grandmother was the same way with my mother. My sister, brother and myself hated vegetables growing up. I remember mom and dad always referred to us as picky eaters! They did not check with themselves to realize how picky they were.
I love my parents, they made me who I am today: strong, confident, independent woman. But this is how they grew up. I am here to tell moms that if you want your children to eat healthy and clean, you have to start with yourself. Don’t ask them to eat broccoli if you don’t eat it.
TEACH THEM BY EXAMPLE!
Our kids mimic our behavior. They talk like us, act like us, behave like us and eat like us. Don’t expect them to eat kale if you are eating chicken burgers. Don’t change them…change YOU! They will change on their own terms.
I was a picky eater ALL my life. Up until few years ago when I decided to change my life and eat healthy. It took me months but I learned to eat new foods that I have not tried before like kale, beets, star fruit, dragon fruit, blueberries and so much more. I did NOT force my kids to this way of living.
They saw me make and drink smoothies daily and their curiosity got the best of them. Then the question ( every mother dreams of) “ mommy can I try it?”
Little by little they started eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes and seeds. My 4 year old loves chia seeds and calls them “chita” seeds. My son loves cilantro and raw onions. At my daughter’s birthday party last July, we had a taco guy. My son had his tacos loaded with onions and cilantro. His friends asked him if his mom makes him eat the vegetables and he answered them by saying “ I love that stuff.”
Do my kids eat everything I give them? NO WAY. They are still children and they will say “no” to many new foods or sometimes old ones. They go through their phases and moods just like grown ups.
However, my children always see an abundance of fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains in the house. They see me and my husband eat those foods on a daily basis.
Some children tend to love and try everything and some children are pickier than others. But there is one common denominator, if the parents eat it on a consistent basis, the kids are more likely to eat it someday. If not when you’re asking them to, but they will eventually.
