Day 19 — Friday, February 5: Outward Focus on spreading the Gospel by Supporting Indigenous Pastors

Day five of our outward focus is on spreading the gospel by supporting indigenous pastors. An indigenous pastor is a local pastor who understands the culture, the language, and the people of a particular region. Since they are native to the region, they are often more effective in earning the trust of the local people and, therefore, spreading the gospel.

These local indigenous pastors often welcome the support of western churches who can provide finances, training, encouragement, and prayer. Paul and Barnabas had a ministry of supporting local indigenous pastors that included all of the above. We see an example of this in Acts 15:36 where we read,

And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.”

Supporting cross-cultural indigenous pastors should be part of every western church’s mission strategy. The western church has an abundance of resources, especially in finances and education. The majority world church has an abundance of local pastors who understand the people, culture, and language. Supporting indigenous pastors is a perfect partnership to spread the gospel to every tongue, tribe, nation, and people.

  1. Pray for International Mission Board missionaries who work all over the world to train indigenous pastors and church planters. Pray specifically for Jeremy and Kimberly and Jeff and Jamie who work with the IMB and have relationships with our church.
  2. Pray for Pastor Julkys (Hu-case), an indigenous pastor from Cuba who our team will be working with this May.
  3. Pray for God to lead us to the right pastors and partnerships to mobilize our resources and spread the gospel all over the world.

Today’s short but powerful prayer is, “Lord, help us to be a strong encouragement to local pastors all over the world.”

For further prayer and meditation, listen to “Behold Our God” by Sovereign Grace Music, and pray that God’s glory will fill the earth.
