Day 6 — Saturday, January 23 Upward Focus on God’s Righteousness

God’s righteousness is the focus on our sixth day of our upward prayer focus. God is perfectly holy and righteousness. God calls us to be holy as He is holy, but He not only calls us to be holy — He offers His righteousness to us through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 3:21–22 says,

“But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it — the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.”

God offers us a righteousness that cannot be earned; it can’t be earned because it’s a righteousness that does not come from perfectly keeping every commandment of the Law God gave to the people through Moses. This righteousness that God offers us is received by faith; it is through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe in Him. As you know firsthand, when you believe in Jesus Christ you do not actually become sinless. We all continue to sin and long for the day when we will sin no longer.

Instead of actually becoming sinless here and now, God promises to credit all who believe with the righteousness of Jesus Christ. This means we are considered righteous in the sight of God because of the righteousness of Jesus. His righteousness becomes our righteousness through faith. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says about Jesus,

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Through faith in Jesus, He is credited with our sin, and we who believe are credited with His righteousness. What is better than that? We are no longer counted sinful in the sight of God, but we are counted righteousness. Both forgiveness and righteousness come to us through faith in Jesus Christ.

  • Are you glad that you do not have to earn righteousness? Tell God.
  • Are you glad that right now, if you have placed your faith in Jesus, you are considered righteous in God’s sight? Tell God.

Today’s short but powerful prayer (SBPP) is, “You give me righteousness through faith.” Praise God for that truth throughout today.
