Wilbur and Orville Wright were the first two men to successfully fly an aircraft at Kitty Hawk in the year 1903. Wilbur was forty-two years old and Orville was thirty-eight years of age when they embarked on the journey of creating their first flight. After reading about the two brothers and their journey to flying their first flight in the book the wright brothers by David McCullough, I learned that the two brothers were very bold and creative. Wilbur and Orville were said to be so much alike they even “thought together” Wilbur said in the book The Wright Brothers:

“They lived in the same house, worked together six days a week, ate their meal together; kept their money in a joint bank account, even “thought together,” Wilbur said.”

The Wright brothers were so creative in many different ways they both loved music, to cook, and they would constantly fix things around the house when they weren’t working. In the book The Wright brothers, McCullough wrote:

“Both loved music- Wilbur played the harmonica, Orville, the mandolin. At work they sometimes found themselves spontaneously whistling or humming the same tune at the same time. Both were strongly attached to home. Both liked to cook. Biscuits and candy were Orville’s specialties. Wilbur took pride in his gravy, and for the Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey insisted on taking charge of the stuffing.”

Even though the brothers were said to be so alike and do many of the same things together, they also had many different qualities from one another:

“Where Wilbur was little bothered by what others might be thinking or saying, Orville was extremely sensitive to criticism or mockery of any kind. Then, too, Orville had what were referred to within the family as his “peculiar spells,” times when, overtired or feeling put-upon, he could turn uncharacteristically moody and irritable.”

The book The Wright brothers taught me that the two brothers were very resourceful and economical. At the end of chapter five, Wilbur and Orville finally had their first successful flight in Kitty Hawk. To say the brothers were happy would be un understatement. They had been working for this for quite some time and it was one of the most memorable days in history. Reading The Wright Brothers and learning about how the two brothers were so intelligent and creative made me think about what they could’ve accomplished in todays world full of technology. I feel that the hard working ethic that the Wright brothers practiced is not as common in todays workforce and I believe if people always practiced the dedicated work ethic demonstrated by the Wright brothers the creations would be innumerable.
