How Arbitrage Betting Works (USA)

Let’s say that you want to bet on a football match between Team A and Team B…

You find a sportsbook that is offering odds of 2.0 (or +100 in American odds) for Team A to win and another sportsbook that is offering odds of 2.5 (or +150 in American odds) for the same team to win. You can then place a bet on both sportsbooks, using the same amount or a different amount for each bet.

If Team A wins the match, you will profit from both bets. The bet at the sportsbook with odds of 2.0 will return your stake plus a profit of the same amount, while the bet at the sportsbook with odds of 2.5 will return a profit that is 50% higher.

The difference between the two profits will be your net arbitrage profit.

For example, if you bet $100 on Team A at both sportsbooks, your profit at the sportsbook with odds of 2.0 will be $100, and your profit at the sportsbook with odds of 2.5 will be $150. The difference between the two profits, $150 — $100 = $50, is your net arbitrage profit.

Arbitrage betting can be a lucrative strategy, but it requires a lot of time and effort to find and take advantage of arbitrage opportunities. It also requires a substantial amount of capital, as you need to place bets at multiple sportsbooks to capitalize on the differences in odds.

In the United States, arbitrage betting is legal, but it is not without its risks. Sportsbooks may limit or close the accounts of bettors who are suspected of arbitrage betting, and some sportsbooks may even refuse to accept bets from arbitrage bettors. Additionally, arbitrage betting can be complex, and it is easy to make mistakes or miscalculations that can result in losses, always use some software!
