No justice, no peace, not my America
My heart goes out to the Brown family and to all the people of Ferguson. The system has failed you; the system has failed Mike Brown; the system has failed POC and continues to fail them. I wish I could say I was shocked by the decision to not indict Darren Wilson, but I can’t say that I am. I know many others who also were not shocked by the outcome. All of us were, though, disgusted, ashamed, disappointed, bitter, angry, and profoundly saddened. I imagine not only because Mike Brown and his family and the people of Ferguson, Missouri still have not received justice, but because me and many others were not shocked. We were not shocked because this has become typical.
But there are many out there who are fighting for this to no longer be typical. Or at the very least, fighting from the beginning to make this visible. There are many out there standing and protesting and marching in solidarity with Mike Brown, with his family, with the people of Ferguson and with all of the Black bodies that have been unfairly subjected to a broken system.
Underneath the debris there is hope. Darren Wilson is not completely in the clear. He may very well face a federal civil rights investigation. He may very well incite a change in police policies and restraint. Mike Brown did not receive justice yesterday, but he may very well receive justice at a later time, although we are all weary of the waiting.
My heart goes out to Mike Brown, his family, and the people of Ferguson.
Justice for Mike Brown.
