Trump Is Still Focused Long term On Starting His Own Political Party — Wise Up Republicans
It has been reported that Mitch McConnell and other Republicans are furious over President Trump’s impetuosity that they see as undermining future Republican control of Congress. As usual with Trump he doesn’t give a damn about what is good for others, it is all about him. He has never cared about the Republican Party beyond using it as a launching platform for his own despotic ambitions.
You will notice that when Trump periodically returns to campaign mode he remains focused exclusively on his 39% base, showing absolutely no interest in broadening the party’s appeal. The point is that that 39%, math wise, retains within it a winning margin for Trump or a Trump stand-in in a three party race between the Democrats, Republicans and whatever Trump chooses to call his party — probably the “Trump Party.”
Of course Trump wants the GOP to give him wins, but if it can’t for any reason, including his own ham handed tweets, he will simply claim to his supporters that it was the party’s fault. He was betrayed, making him even stronger with his supporters if and when he chooses to make the breakout to his own party.
So for the moment Trump can afford to play cat and mouse with the GOP leadership in ways that strengthens him personally and weakens the party collectively. Yet how Trump intends to handle the mechanics of the electoral process, which between them the Republicans and Democrats control, I haven’t a clue. I mean getting on the ballot is not a sure thing for independent candidates, especially one so hated by the establishment. But as we have seen Trump has his ways, unless that is, the magic evaporates over the next several years.
Of course this all depends on how those pesky Russian and other crime investigations turn out. I’m betting that money laundering is what nails him.
