The Bay City Bluebirds rallied from a three run deficit Monday night to defeat the Carmel Cardinals, 6–3, and win the the western tri-state division championship.
The Cardinals led the Bluebirds for most of the game, and they had a 3–0 lead in the eighth inning.
In the Bluebird half of the eighth, Tim Story, the first baseman, was walked and stole second base. Left fielder, Biff Carbosi, was walked intentionally. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch thrown by the Cardinal’s starting pitcher, Ronnie Miller. Following the error, Miller was relieved by Chuck Nelson.
Bluebirds second baseman, Carbo Garbey, drove Nelson’s first pitch deep into centerfield, bringing home both baserunners. Two pitches later, Garbey stole home, tying the game.
Nelson struck the next two batters out. It looked like the teams would have to battle it out in the ninth inning until Carey Clark, Bluebird catcher, hit a home run, putting his team ahead by one. The Bluebirds added two more runs to their score in the ninth to clinch the victory.
The Bluebirds are now assured a place in the tri-state playoffs, which begin next week. Its opponent will be determined tonight in a game between the Santa Ana Generals and the Redwood Knights.
