4 Tips to Catch Up on Late Bills
No one wants to be behind on their bills. It’s a terrible feeling, one that send even the most fiscally responsible person into a spiral of wondering what they did wrong or how they can catch up. Fixing the problem of being late on your bills requires a very diligent and careful effort of cutting all unnecessary expenses and catch up as quickly as you possibly can. Here are four tips for catching up on your late bills:
1. Make a list.
Prioritizing your bills in a numbered list by importance and overall cost to you is a good start. Rent and utilities, or a mortgage payment, should be paid first if possible, because being kicked out of your home for missing payments or losing utilities can greatly affect all other areas of your life. Without a place to stay, you would be risking a much longer term period of difficulty as you catch up. In a difficult situation, pay your credit card bills last. This can greatly affect your credit score in the long run, but in an emergency, having a roof over your head is priority number one.
2. Cut all extraneous expenses.
Do you eat out, or go to the movies? Do you have a cable subscription, magazines, or music streaming subscriptions? Cancel all unnecessary subscription services until you can get caught up on your bills. Eat in as much as possible, and cut out trips to the coffee shop or late night runs for fast food. Anything that can be sold to help you get back on track — old jewelry, furniture, etc. — can make a big difference.
3. Try to find extra work.
Take on extra work if you can. If you are already working a forty hour a week job, consider working on the weekends if possible, whether freelancing, taking a second job, or doing a side job like lawn care, pet sitting, or tutoring. These can help you have extra income that you can set toward your bills and pay them off faster.
4. Once you get caught up, don’t immediately go back to your old ways.
Setting up a strict budget where you are still cutting out extra spending can help you save a little bit of an emergency fund so you do not fall behind on bills again. Don’t immediately re-subscribe to your favorite cable provider or sign up for Spotify Premium. Eat in as much as possible. Even a few months of living like this can help you prevent crises from happening again.
