5 Tips for Healthy Living on a Budget

Healthy living is something we are all in pursuit of — living our best lives and taking care of ourselves is a rewarding and often expensive challenge. But living healthfully and making good choices doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are five tips for living healthy on a budget:

1. Establish a grocery budget.

The first step to living healthily on a budget is to have a budget. You’ll never know how much you’re spending on food, the gym, or eating out until you start paying attention to your monthly expenses and analyzing each line item. A grocery budget can be as simple as having a limit on how much you are willing to spend on eating out, or you can tie your grocery budget to your ideal meal plan.

2. Join a gym (but it doesn’t have to be the most expensive one).

Joining a gym can be an intimidating and expensive decision, but it’s also entirely possible for you to join a less expensive gym or exercise outdoors to get the full benefit of your membership and stay healthy. Even regular walks in the neighborhood are better than no activity at all. Consider joining classes at a local community center, which tends to be more cost-effective. Or join a sports league if you enjoy a specific sport like volleyball or soccer. However, if your budget is flexible enough to join a gym with higher membership fees, take full advantages of the number of classes you get and make it work for you!

3. Track your progress.

Healthy living is all about accountability. Do you know if you’re meeting your goals? Investing in a fitness tracker like a FitBit or Garmin, particularly if you’re not part of a gym, can be an investment that yields dividends for your long-term health goals. Fitness trackers can help you know exactly how many steps you take per day and how many calories you’re roughly burning. Healthy living isn’t just about weight loss or gain; it’s also about maintaining your health for the years to come.

4. Meal prep on the weekends.

Meal prep is touted as a key elements of staying healthy and cutting out unnecessary or convenience spending. Meal prep can be as simple as making enough salads or sandwiches to cover a few of the week’s lunches, or you can prepare a larger dinner that makes enough leftovers to have for multiple days in a row. Preparing healthy snacks like fruit, cucumbers, carrots, almonds, or hummus is a great way to make sure you’re well fed throughout the week. No more 3:00 pm stops at the vending machine or candy jar.

5. Know that health should come from moderation, not deprivation.

The definition of health is different to each person — there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to your individual wellness goals. Health can mean running a nine-minute mile to one person, or eating out fewer times a week to another person. Healthy living isn’t prescriptive, but a fluid and daily action toward living your life with greater energy and well-being.
