Have you ever been told “I love that you’re latina”? Of course, that’s one of many clichés north american guys have. Then come other phrases such as: “that sexy accent, that big booty, those curves …” All of those seem to make guys “crazy”, but they’ll tell us that we are the “crazy” ones. Excuse me? No sweetie, you define with the word “craziness” what for us means “culture”. So for my puerto rican ladies in the United States start taking notes…

1. “don’t touch a puerto rican woman because she’s going to destroy you” :

Lie! We're only going to teach you that the world is bigger and more diverse than the state you were born. That implies new adventures, new people, lots of Spanish, lots of laughs, too many jokes, one to another visit to the best beaches in the Caribbean, burn skin, and gaining some weight with what we called “good food”.

2.“don’t go out with her if you don’t know how to dance”:

We’re going to laugh a lot but we can teach you move your two left feet. And yes … we dance everywhere (even we’re working) … What happens if I listen my favorite salsa when I’m doing some shopping? I WILL FINISH MOVING LIKE A SNAKE … it’s something that runs through our veins, it’s normal. Salsa, merengue, reguetón, bachata, and PLENA.

3.“puerto ricans are whores”:

The truth is that we are very sensual, we love to dress really good, we are provocative women, we like to attract attention,we are beautiful in all sizes and that provokes pleasure, but does not make us whores.

4.“She will not let you sleep”:

Let’s say that’s false, but true at the same time. If you are laying down in bed it will not be to sleep … We may end up talking all night because we have a lot to discuss or maybe there are other reasons. But… After everything, you will listen to us at all times … even singing in the bathroom. You can’t escape from us because our voice is heard everywhere.

5. “never going to arrive early”:

Not all of us are the same mess! Although, thinking about how far is everything in the United States then maybe yes… We can be delayed a little more than usual. Just set up an hour before… that’s how the puerto rican timing works.

6. “a come and go of hips”:

This is how Mother Earth made us. A day with more hips, another day with more tits and a day with more booty. It depends on the moon and which side you decide to see us.

7. “those ladies are passionate kissers”:

I have listened to it too many times. Apparently we have softer lips, a warmer mouth and a unique twist between tongues. Nothing more to say.

8. “too confident of themselves”:

Well, I don’t know much about american women, but puerto ricans always grew up with a lot of confidence. We don’t waste time on nonsense, we have many things to do and the truth is that we walk knowing what we really want. And if you’re not part of what we want then we’ll tell you!

9. “are women maintained by the government”:

Every time I hear this I want to punch a face. Our political-economic status is different from other Hispanic countries because of our territorial relationship with the United States. However, today’s puerto rican women has joined the working class and occupied important successful platforms on the island and around the world. Most of us are educated and hard workers.

10. “she will treat you like a king in bed”:

It is not true. We are the queens and you just enjoy what it feels to be there.

11. “ those ladies don’t like to communicate”:

False! … We come from a small island that everyone knows each other, everyone talks a lot, everyone writes, everyone communicates … why talk to someone who does not answer back? It does not make sense and we don’t care about ghosts. If we really don’t answer you back is because we just don’t like you.

12. “ puerto ricans take feminism very seriously”:

Guys!!!! Please READ THIS!! Wanting something by our own, being real and not perfect, seeking equal rights, not wanting to use your family’s last name in ours, wanting to be out because the house won’t make us any “smarter”; getting our hands between our legs because we don’t always need you, and wearing short skirts because you are supposed to learn not to rape … this is wanting to be a woman, to be a human, NOT A FEMINIST.

So think about this the next time you meet a puerto rican lady. We are the perfect mix created at the door of the Caribbean; we are boricuas and there’s nothing wrong being different. We are not oppressed women, that’s it.
