Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique, which helps save a life during cardiac or breathing emergency or near drowning. However, even after CPR training, if you are not confident that your knowledge and abilities aren’t perfect; just remember that doing nothing is better than doing something to save someone’s life. In order to help you help someone in emergency situation, here is a step-by-step guide for administering CPR:

  • Give chest compressions: Put the person on his or her back on a firm surface and place your hand on top of the other and clasp them together. With the heel of the hands and straight elbows push straight down on (compress) the center of the chest at least 2 inches deep. Perform 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100/minute, letting the chest rise between each compression.
  • Proceed to open the airway: After performing 30 chest compressions, open the airway of the person by tilting the head back slightly and gently lifting the chin forward.
  • Deliver rescue breaths: Making sure the person mouth is clear, tilt the head back slightly and lift their chin. Pinch the nostrils closed and take a normal breath, place your mouth over the person’s mouth, and blow until you can see his chest rise. After giving two rescue breaths, starting giving compressions again.
  • Repeat CPR steps: Keep performing the above 3 CPR steps until the person exhibits signs of life, such as breathing.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a life-saving first aid procedure. It can efficiently enhance the chances of survival during emergency situation. Get trained!
