I remember exactly where I was the first time I visited amazon.com. It was 2001. I was in AP British Literature, ostensibly doing research on “The Lady of Shalott.” What I really wanted was The Great Santini. I’d been up until well past midnight the night before finishing The Prince of Tides and I was entering a Pat Conroy phase. Don’t laugh. This was my first exposure to modern literature.
