Fall 2022 has approached and it is a great time to see what the anime world has to offer.

This season has both highly anticipated mega hits as well as lesser-known new anime. There are more than 40 shows currently airing, making it a challenge to pick and choose what to watch.

While previously I wrote a Fall 2022 new anime guide for different genres, this article will rank my top 10 favourite anime currently airing purely based on my personal enjoyment.

As this list is specific to both brand new anime and seasonal anime released in Fall 2022, it will omit ongoing shows from previous seasons such as One Piece and Uncle from Another World.

The top 10 anime for Fall 2022 in descending order are…

10. Raven of the Inner Palace | Koukyuu no Karasu | 後宮の烏

Studio: Bandai Namco Pictures | Genre: Fantasy, Romance

Summary

Inside the inner palace of Xia Dynasty’s lives the Raven Consort, a young girl with mysterious powers who answers to no one. One day, the Xia emperor visits her to ask for her help finding the owner of an earring.

Why I Enjoy This

Period accurate costume designs, lively side characters and the pleasing general aesthetics. Plus point for using traditional Chinese characters for the names.

You can watch the trailer here.

9. Akiba Maid War | Akiba Meido Sensou | アキバ冥途戦争

Studio: P.A. Works | Genre: Action, Comedy

Summary

It’s 1999 and a new maid goes to work at the maid cafe “Ton Tokoton” in the Akiba district. However, she quickly realises that working as a maid is not just coffee and cute gestures. Beneath all the cute and glitzy surface is a ruthless and violent war between maid cafes.

Why I Enjoy This

Cute character designs, over-the-top violence and amusing casts. The fight scenes and music also pair well to make things more… explosive.

You can watch the trailer here.

8. More than a Married Couple, but not Lovers | Fuufu Ijou, Koibito Miman | 夫婦以上、恋人未満

Studio: studio MOTHER | Genre: Romance, Comedy

Summary

Two high school students are paired together in a mandatory “Couple Practical” course where couples live together. In order to graduate and be paired with the crushes of their choice, Jirou and Akari need to score as high as possible without falling for one another.

Why I Enjoy This

The character interactions are fun and enjoyable. Seeing how they gradually fall for one another but not be completely clueless about their feelings is another point in this show’s favour.

You can watch the trailer here.

7. Reincarnated as a Sword | Tensei shitara Ken Deshita | 転生したら剣でした

Studio: C2C | Genre: Action, Fantasy

Summary

A Japanese man is reincarnated as a magical sword in another world where magic exists. He ends up being paired by a black cat-girl and decides to explore the world together in her quest to surpass the limits of her race.

Why I Enjoy This

Seeing Fran (cat-girl) and Master (the sword) fawn and interact with one another is amusing. While the sword is powerful, it is also not powerful enough to the point of being overpowered.

You can watch the trailer here.

6. Blue Lock | ブルーロック

Studio: 8bit | Genre: Sports, Action

Summary

Yoichi Isagi, a high schooler striker decides to join the Blue Lock facility. The facility’s goal — to produce the best striker for Japan in the World Cup, regardless of the cost.

Why I Enjoy This

While other shows focus on importance of teamwork and friendship, this show emphasises the individualistic drive even at the cost of others. The action is smooth and the characters are interesting.

You can watch the trailer here.

5. Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War | Bleach: Sennen Kessen-hen | BLEACH 千年血戦篇

Studio: Pierrot | Genre: Action, Fantasy, Adventure

Summary

Ichigo and his friends find themselves drawn into the conflict between the Soul Society and Hollows. This time they face the threat of Yhwach, the father of all Quincies, the Wandenreich who declares war against the Soul Society.

Why I Enjoy This

Bleach is finally back after a long wait and as this is the final arc, I am hyped up to see the final conclusion of the series. All the action scenes are fluid and dynamic, and the nostalgia is real.

You can watch the trailer here.

4. The Eminence in Shadow | Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! | 陰の実力者になりたくて!

Studio: Nexus| Genre: Action, Fantasy, Comedy, Adventure

Summary

Cid Kagenou is reincarnated into another world with immense superhuman powers and magical abilities. However, he chooses to live a seemingly normal life on the surface but as the overlord in the dark — the eminence in shadow.

Why I Enjoy This

Seeing how every of Cid’s “make-believe” stories actually become real and his fumbling antics actually resolve the situations much to the amazement of his subordinates is always fun to see.

You can watch the trailer here.

3. Chainsaw Man | チェンソーマン

Studio: MAPPA| Genre: Action, Supernatural

Summary

All Denji wants is to find a girl, live a normal life, and eat a scrumptious breakfast every day. However, he is forced to the world of devil-hunting and ends up merging with his pet devil Pochita to kill devils under the Public Safety Bureau.

Why I Enjoy This

As someone who enjoys the comics, being able to see it come to life on the screen is gratifying. MAPPA also did a good job for this show, as the pacing, visuals and fight scenes are all amazing as usual.

You can watch the trailer here.

2. Spy x Family Part 2

Studio: Wit Studio, CloverWorks| Genre: Action, Comedy

Summary

The super-spy Twilight a.k.a. Loid Forger, assassin Yor Briar, and mind-reader Anya continue their attempts to befriend Donovan Desmond. Meanwhile, a new member of the family joins in the fun — Bond, a dog who can predict the future.

Why I Enjoy This

Spy X Family is hilarious and this new season does not disappoint. All the characters and their misunderstandings are funny to watch. This show is just a bundle of joy and my go-to relaxing show for the season.

You can watch the trailer here.

Rather than choosing one single anime for first place, I ended up choosing 2 shows as a tie. First off, we have…..

My Hero Academia Season 6 | Boku no Hero Academia 6th Season | 僕のヒーローアカデミア 6th Season

Studio: Bones | Genre: Action

Summary

Heroes and villains finally clash in this season. After being tipped off by Hawks, the heroes are now going all out against the Paranormal Liberation Front. Who will win and who will lose?

Why I Enjoy This

I remain partial to BnHA as it is one of my favourite ongoing manga series. Animation aside, the stakes are extremely high for this season and both heroes and villains will both face dire consequences. Being able to see so many heroes and villains clash in such an epic manner is also one of the main perks.

You can watch the trailer here.

Next we have…

Mob Psycho 100 III | モブサイコ100 III

Studio: Bones | Genre: Action, Comedy, Supernatural

Summary

The final season of Mob Psycho 100. In this season, Shigeo Kageyama finally shows the hero settling down after the major clashes in previous seasons. Now, he needs to worry about both supernatural abilities and his future high school plans as well.

Why I Enjoy This

While Shigeo was more timid and indecisive in previous seasons, you can really see him start becoming more independent. All the characters have also shown much more character progression and growth. Reigen is more supportive of his employees’ plans, Ritsu is more expressive and carefree, Serizawa has also taken the initiative to better himself and contribute to society. As much as I look forward to this season, I will definitely miss it when it is over.

You can watch the trailer here.

In addition to the top 11 anime mentioned above, honourable mentions include:

  • Muv-Luv Alternative Season 2 (direct continuation of Muv-Luv Alternative Season 1, things get much darker)
  • My Master Has No Tail (a shapeshifting tanuki hopes to learn the art of Rakugo Storytelling from a nine-tailed fox)
  • I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss (a girl reincarnates in the body of a female villainess from a dating game)
  • Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (a mysterious girl transfers to a mobile suit school with an illegal gundam mech)
  • Megaton-kyuu Musashi 2nd Season (the humans are now seeking refuge in new places while more variables complicate the efforts for peaceful human-alien coexistence)
  • Human Bug Daigaku (guy sentenced to death cannot die and rediscovers his memories leading up to his execution)
  • Beast Tamer (a laid back main character with overpowered taming abilities goes taming ultimate species after being expelled from the heroes’ party)

That is all I have for now. Feel free to share your opinions if you enjoy (or don’t) the shows I recommended above.

Happy watching!
