Ashura

These are some of the practices and duwaas for the night and day of Ashura according to Sunni Islam( Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah)

The virtues of fasting on the day of Ashura are indeed immense. Abu Qatadah r.a narrated:

صِيامُ يومِ عاشُوراءَ، إِنِّي أحْتَسِبُ على اللهِ أنْ يُكَفِّرَ السنَةَ التِي قَبْلَهُ

"Fasting on the day of Ashura, I hope, will expiate for the sins of the previous year"

(Sahih Muslim)

Intention for fasting in Ashura

نَوَيْتُ صَوْم عشرسُنَّة لله تَعَالى
Nawaitu Sauma Asyura Sunnatal Lillahita’ala.

Or

Nawaitu Sawma Ghadin ‘An Ada’i Sunnati Asyura Lillahi Taala

I intend to fast the fast of Ashura tomorrow for the sake of Allah Taala

Ref: Nahdatul Ulama ( https://islam.nu.or.id/puasa/lafal-niat-puasa-tasua-9-muharram-dan-asyura-10-muharam-p0Irz)

Shaykhul Islam Imam al-Nawawi states in his al-Adhkar:

And he whom anything from the virtues of deeds reaches him should perform them, even though only once (in his lifetime) and even if the narration is weak.

O Allah! By the honour of Hasan and of his brother, and that of his mother and that of his father, and by the honour of his Grandfather(Peace be upon him) and that of his children;

*Farrij 'annaa maa nahnu feehi*

[Here you may describe to your lord the difficulties that you may be facing and need relief from]. Relieve us of what has befallen us!

Recite 7 times:
*Subhaan Allaahi, mil-al-meezaani wa muntahaal-'ilmi wa mablaghal-ridaa wa zinatal-'arshi laa maljaa-a wa laa manjaa-a min Allaahi illaa ilayh*

Glorious is Allah, as much as what is in His great scale, and as far as His knowledge extends, and to such a degree as it attains His pleasure, and to whatever weight may be His Throne; there is no refuge and no safety from Allah except in Him.

*Subhaan Allaahi 'adadash-shaf'i wal watri wal Arshi, wa 'adada kalimaati-llaahit-taammati kullihaa*

Glorious is Allah, (He is declared so) as many as there be even
(numbers) and as many as there be odd, and as many as there be perfect words of His; glory be to Him for them all.

*Nas'alukas-Salaamata bi-Rahmatika yaa Arham ar-Raahimeen*
We ask of You (our Lord) for safety, by Your mercy, O You who is the most
merciful of all those who show mercy;

*Wa Huwa hasbunaa wa ni'mal-wakeel — ni'mal mawlaa wa ni'man-naseer*
And it [Your Mercy] is our sufficiency andour best protection— the very best master and the very best help!

*Wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billahil-'aliyyil-'adheem*
And there is no power and no strength except in Allah, the High, the Great!

*Wa sall-Allaahu ta'aalaa 'alaa sayyidinaa Muhammadin wa 'alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa 'alaal-mumineena wal-muminaati wal-muslimeena wal-uslimaati 'adada dharraatil-wujood wa 'adada ma'loomaati-llaahi wal-hamduli-llaahi
rabbil-'aalameen*
May the grace of Allah, the Exalted, be upon our Master Muhammad and upon his family and his companions, and upon the believers men and women, and upon those who submit (in Islam), as much as there be atoms in existence and as much as there be things known to Allah; and all praise is due to Him, Lord of the Worlds.

And

Allaaamumma Yaa Mufarrija Kulli Karbin, Wa Yaa Mukhrija Zhi-Nuuni Yauma ‘Asyuuraa’, Wa Yaa Jaami’a Syamsil Ya’quuba Yauma ‘Asyuuraa’, Wa Yaa Gafiira Zhambi Daawuuda Yauma ‘Asyuuraa’, Wa Yaa Kaasyifa Dzhurri Ayyuuba Yauma ‘Asyuuraa’, Wa Yaa Saami’a Da’wati Muusaa Wa Haaruuna Yauma ‘Asyuuraa’, Wa Yaa Khaaliqa Ruuhi Muhammadin Shallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallama Yauma ‘Asyuuraa’.

Yaa Rahmaanad -Dun-Yaa Wal-Aakhirah, Wa Atil ‘Umrii Fii Taa’atika Wa Mahabbatika Wa Ridhaka Ya Arhamar-Raahimiin, Wa Ahyinii Hayaatan Tayyibataw Wa Tawaffanii ‘Alal-Islaami Wal-Iimaani Yaa Arhamar-Raahimiin.

Sending 1000 prayers (Salawat/ Durood Sharif) upon the Prophet ﷺ on the day of 'Āshūrā :

Whosoever sends one thousand prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ on the day of 'Ashura' will enter the fortress of ten of the Prophets whom Allah saved on that day. The first of that is forgiveness and salvation from the Fire. He will also receive the reward of those who spend in charity in that year. It will act as a zakāt (cleansing and purification) for his works; and if he had no other works besides these one thousand prayers sent upon the Prophet ﷺ they will equal a lifetime's amount of worship.

~ Shaykh Qāsim al-Qandūsi (Qs)

These Sunni practices for Ashura are also reported in the books of

Shaykhul Islam Imam Ibn Hajar Al Asqalani author of Fath Al Bari Syarh Sahih Bukhari and

In a narration recorded by Al-Hafiz Abu Musa Muhammad b. Bakr b. ‘Isa al-Madani in his book al-Waza’if, on the authority of Jabir b. Abdullah:

Whoever, a deed of virtue reaches him from Allah and he acts upon it out of faith and hope in reward, Allah will bestow that upon him, even though it was not like what he thought!

For clarifications regarding Innovations/Bid’a:

Abu Bakr al-Ajurri narrated to us that Abdullah bin Muhammad al-`Atashy narrated to him that Ibrahim ibn al-Junyad narrated to him that Harmalah ibn Yahya said: I heard Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi`i (rahmatAllah alayh) say:

البدعة بدعتان: بدعة محمودة، وبدعة مذمومة، فما وافق السنة فهو محمود، وما خالف السنة فهو مذموم. واحتج بقول عمر بن الخطاب في قيام رمضان :نعمت البدعة هي

“Innovation is two types: praiseworthy innovation (bid`atun mahmudatun), and blameworthy innovation (bid`atun mazmumatun). So whatever conforms to the Sunnah is praiseworthy (mahmudun), and whatever opposes the Sunnah is blameworthy (mazmumun). And he used as his evidence the statement of `Umar ibn al-Khattab (radiyAllahu anhu) concerning the night prayer of Ramadan: “What a good bid’ah it is!” (ni`mati al-bid`atu hiya).”
