Coffee connoisseurs unite — Caliber’s caffeinated Christmas challenge

Scouring the streets of Edinburgh for the best coffee in the city

by Lyndsay Snoddon

As Christmas approaches (and the need for caffeine quadruples), we’ve decided to celebrate the festivities in true digital agency style here at Caliber. We’re holding an Instagram coffee challenge, imaginatively titled (wait for it) the ‘Caliber Christmas Coffee Challenge’ — catchy, huh?

The idea? We’ll be on a festive coffee scavenger hunt across Edinburgh, leaving our two caffeine connoisseurs Simon Bennison and Thomas Payne to put their taste buds to the test as they trial seasonal offers from brands big and small.

They’ll be rating the coffees from great to greatest and sweet to sweetest with the aim of finding the capital’s best blend. And the best bit? They’ll be doing it blindfolded, so their personal (read hipster) preferences don’t get in the way!

Meet the testers

Simon Bennison — Creative Director and Hipster Coffee Drinker

Simon is a firm advocate of the flat white (a touch of milk with fine bubbles and a velvety consistency, if you’re offering). On a Saturday morning you’ll find him sipping on a freshly brewed coffee from Edinburgh’s William and Johnson.

Thomas Payne (AKA T-Payne) — Head of Design and AeroPress Influencer

Thomas likes his black, piping hot and freshly ground by his vintage oak Hario grinder. A single origin (Ethiopian blend is often preferred) — the fruitier the better.

Both are notoriously hard to please, but we’re up to the challenge! Who will come out on top? Will Starbucks’ Toffee Nut Latte trump specialist blends from Edinburgh’s independent outlets? Head over to our Instagram (@Caliberi) — where we’ll be documenting it every day from the 6th of December to the 15th — to find out!

You can also keep track of the challenge under #CaliberofCoffee.
