Annual Meeker Report Highlights Need for Immediate Availability of Mobile Spectrum

Every year, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner Mary Meeker melts brains with her annual “State of the Web” presentation. This year’s presentation is no different; clocking in at a whopping 165 slides, it contains enough interesting data to keep you crunching for months on end.

In the interest of time, not to mention bandwidth, I’m going to focus on one stat that jumped out at me — the number 81. More specifically, 81%, which is the amount mobile data traffic has increased since last year. Here’s what that looks like in a chart:

According to Meeker’s presentation, the driving force behind this surge is video, which is beginning to take off globally as smartphone and tablet adoption continues to increase.

Here in the smartphone crazy United States, that increase is exacerbating what some have dubbed the “spectrum crunch,” whereby mobile devices and wireless networks are running short the fuel they need to perform at a high level. That’s the not-so-good news. The good news is that, after years of planning and debate, the FCC has finally decided on the rules for its spectrum incentive auctions, so help for spectrum-strapped wireless providers is on the way.

Like I said, that’s just one of the interesting highlights from Meeker’s presentation. There are plenty more if you like to wonk out on Internet data — and who doesn’t, really? — to see for yourself, head on over to Kleiner Perkins’ site and dig in.
