Sometimes you start a project and know exactly where you want to go. And sometimes you just to start. Bootstrap Logos was the latter. When I initially started this project I had no plans to turn it into an online logo store. In the fall of 2016 I started designing a logo a day. For me this was simply a creative outlet, I just wanted to make fun logos. My day job was wonderful, but the projects I was working on were huge and seemed to be dragging on and on. I wanted to feel a little sense of accomplishment…

I have never written a personal ‘year in review’, but I lot happened in 2017. I thought it would be healthy for me to look back on it. If it interests you then read along, if you could care less, you leave with my blessing.

January. A big start to 2017.

This year started off like any other January. I set some basic resolutions. This year my aim was to read more books (12 to be exact). Big goals I know but I accomplished my task.

The second week of January is when things got interesting. I received a phone call from a realtor who wanted…

I don’t have an addiction. I can stop whenever I want. It’s not a problem.

We hear phrases like this all the time. They are the out-workings of addictions. Our culture tends to associate addictions with things like drugs, sex, and alcohol. I’ll argue that we face many other addictions that are harming the quality of our lives. Even if they are subtle.

So let’s define Addiction (Merriam-Webster) :

Compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (such as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly :persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful

My addiction is my phone. I’m not…

My wife lost her father. This is what I learned through it all.

My late, and great, father in-law and I.

It was a year ago today. Up to this point it is the worst moment of my life. I was in our living room sitting across from my wife like any other morning. She received a call, her face went pale, and her eyes welled up. She dropped her coffee on the table, screamed pleading “No!” in grief. Her father was gone.

Seeing your partner suffer so much emotional pain in a single moment is a horrible thing. It was the most helpless I have ever felt.

This year has been challenging. We’ve had ups and our downs, but our…

At the end of last year my phone contract was up for renewal. You all know what this means, a brand new phone (for me an iPhone) at a discounted rate with a contract renewal! Upon checkout I realized that if I upgraded my phone with the contract renewal discount I would be forced into a new contract. In the past I would not have thought twice, but this time I was getting less data (2gb) and paying the same rate as I had been for unlimited data. I was annoyed. …

The tools and equipment we used to ship a fitness training website.

In the summer of 2013 my wife Allison approached me with an idea for an online service. Allison is a personal trainer constantly approached by women who want to get healthy but don’t know where to start. For these women the intimidation of a gym membership and the cost of home training sessions are keeping them from getting fit. Allison saw a problem and proposed a solution. She would go in front of the camera and create an affordable online fitness service for women everywhere. She was extremely excited about this so I had no choice but to help.

Identifying your initial blockers.

Every day we dream, we create perfect situations in our minds and lust over the idea of success. Dreaming is great, but we are built for more than just getting lost in our fantasies. The problem is our dreams evaporate quickly when we add “pursuit” into the recipe. When pursuit becomes a reality our obstacles become just as real, and the “glamorized idea” implodes. At this point most people close their eyes and go back to the comfort and warmth of their Idealized dream.

In effort to take our dreams from “fiction” to “non-fiction” let’s identify…

Ideas don’t do the work for you.

If you have been alive for any length of time you have probably heard these words uttered: “I could have done that.” Do you want to know the truth? You probably couldn’t have done that, the fact that you said those words proves it. You’re stuck watching.

Doers do and spectators judge.

Looking on from the bleachers, it’s easy to assume “I could have done that,” (Yes, I am talking to you couch quarterback). However jumping onto the playing field reveals a view that is quite different from that of the bleachers. With this new perspective a whole new set…

Trimming a beard is a scary thing, but it can be done with grace

Don’t get me wrong, I love having a beard, but at some point it becomes extremely inconvenient. That point is usually when I become more aware of my beard than the meal I’m trying to enjoy.

Killing your beard is a scary thought, and going from full grown to clean cut will shock even the most loving of friends and family. I have many friends who have asked me how I manage my beard, so I decided to write a little how-to guide. Here is the step-by-step process of how I preserve my beard in the midst of downsizing.

More excuses will never build a better life.

It never fails, your alarm goes off, you hit the snooze, roll over, and repeat the process. Right from our waking moments, our comfort is desperately trying to claim a spot at the center of our world. We have become victims of our own comfort, and find ourselves building lives based on feeling.

Comfort never got anyone anywhere. The seen aspect of every successful life was built on countless hours of unseen sacrifice, effort, and perseverance. We covet others’ skills, careers, relationships, and bodies, wishing we were fortunate enough to be in their position. To ease our own minds, we…
