Camille Edwards the Reporter

Camille Edwards aspired to be a reporter from the time she was a junior in high school. Edwards was the editor of her school’s newspaper. Her passion for the written and spoken word bloomed during her high school years.

Camille Edwards also loved to ask questions. She interviewed a local reporter and anchor in Detroit during her senior year. It was then that Edwards knew she wanted to be a television news reporter. After all, everything she loved to do — writing, asking questions, talking — would all be combined into one job.

Edwards applied to just one college, the University of Michigan. She had four journalistic internships during her college years — all at Detroit television stations. That is where she got to see firsthand what it was like to be a reporter, which, she learned, was by no means glamorous.

Edwards witnessed reporters running to get interviews and frantically preparing to go live during breaking news events. This aspect attracted Camille even more to the profession of reporting.

She loved the grit involved in reporting. Camille was never one to enjoy the spotlight. When she earned her first reporter job at the then-ABC affiliate in Toledo, Ohio, she was taken aback by all the attention. Camille loved chasing after a story. Whether it was convincing someone to go on camera or skillfully writing a script, the behind-the-scenes work was more appealing to Camille.

When Camille began to gain public notoriety, she became concerned. She did not like being recognized. So, after a year of reporting, she decided to turn in her microphone. This turned out to be an easy decision for Camille. She loved writing and crafting a story. And even as a reporter, Edwards was always interested in other reporters’ stories. She liked having her hands in everything.

So, once she realized being a reporter wasn’t a good fit, she started producing. She was able to oversee all the reporters in her newscast. She could make suggestions and offer help to anyone working on her show. Camille Edwards loved being a producer. It was early training as she learned to be a leader. Producing local newscasts helped Camille launch her career in management.
