Making Assumptions
by Cancergeek

Earlier today the above tweet was posted on Twitter.
Since that time I personally received several direct messages asking me for my opinion, my take, my thoughts and seeking a response on why someone would want to make such a change.
There even happened to be a few public responses, such as this one:

It’s interesting to me that so many “leaders” in healthcare are so quick to make assumptions or jump to conclusions.
We need to remember to respect people’s decisions just as we must respect a patients decision.
We need to empathize and place ourselves in the shoes of others.
Some people say love more, fear less.
I say empathize more, assume less.
Not everything is always as it appears.
Whether it’s the perception of someone being a leader when they’re truly nothing more than showmanship, a patient that appears to be young and normal when on the inside they’re struggling to live another day, or a loved one smiling when the banter is telling them they’re not worthy…we need to remember, not everything appears as it is.
That’s the importance of “why” in healthcare.
Never assume, conclude, prejudge, or perceive until you take the time to stop, look, listen, feel, and understand the context of another persons journey.
Then try and see the texture of the world through their lens.
When we assume, we do nothing more than make an ass of you and me.
Don’t be a fucking ass in healthcare.
Make magic happen for another person.
Care at the N of 1.
