You ever hear something so good you can’t stop? I’m honestly completely obsessed with SZA and it’s been weeks since I obsessively listened to her new album “Ctrl” on repeat.

So let’s start with the basics. SZA, or “sizza”, is a badass R&B/hip-hop artist on the Top Dawg Entertainment label (think: Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q) and she’s been around for a bit. She’s never had a studio debut album and from what I understand, has been working on this album for a while.

I think some people were disappointed with the album, but I cannot emphasize how much I disagree with these people. I genuinely think they might have only listened to 2 or 3 of the big songs from the album, which are a bit disjointed and not as good when standalone.

So my recommendation is to really listen to the album from start to finish — it has a common story/theme (“Control” aka “Ctrl”). Then once you’ve done that 10x or so, I think you’ll agree with the following song preferences:

  • Most Underrated Song: “Normal Girl” — this one was really hard to choose because I personally think about 5 of the songs on her album are under-hyped, but I cannot get over this song. Amazing beat/rhythm, showcases her voice, and balance. Obsessed.
  • Should Be A Single: “Doves In The Wind” — if you have only heard “Supermodel”, “Drew Barrymore” and “Love Galore” this should be the next up for you. Literally heard them playing this at a comedy show last week and was so happy. It’s probably not all over the radio because it says the word pussy 100,000 times, but that’s because SZA is talking about how pussy is used derogatorily. She also has some support from Kendrick on this song so… why isn’t this everywhere?!
  • Favorite Song of the Album: “Garden (Say It Like Dat)” — this is the song that made me fall in love with the album. Am I the only one who thinks it’s cute as hell that SZA (fine fuckin’ SZA) is insecure about her “small booty”… ugh. Adorable song and a must-listen. Upbeat and hopeful in it’s own way. Second most under-rated.
  • Special Mention: “Broken Clocks” — also a great song. I love the beats on her songs and some of the experimental stuff. Third most under-rated.

Excited to see what else SZA comes up with. She’s definitely my favorite female artist at the moment.
