I agree that in an ideal world it shouldn’t be this important.

But in practice it is.

And it’s valid for all languages, not just English. You might benefit in one language but be at a disadvantage in another country that speaks another language. For example I would be at a disadvantage in China.

You either have to invest in learning the local language, accept your disadvantage in that geography, or not operate in the geography.
