In this article, we’ll explore how to talk to your parents about weed… Their weed.

Many anti-legalization voices have been screaming “won’t somebody please think of the children,” terrified that their teens will become dopers. When in fact, statistically speaking they should be far more worried about their parents.

It’s flying in the face of all the stereotypes we’ve seen on TV. We’re not really talking about it as a society yet, but make no mistake about, parents love to get high. And so do grandparents!

The Numbers Have Flipped

The numbers don’t lie. Middle-aged Americans are now more likely to smoke weed than their teenage children.

According to a survey in 2014:

  • 7.4 percent of Americans aged 12 to 17 smoked marijuana regularly
  • But 8 percent of 35 to 44-year-olds used marijuana regularly

At the same time, since 2002,

  • Regular marijuana use in the 45 to 54 age group has gone up nearly 50 percent
  • In the 55 to 64 age group, it’s jumped by a whopping 455 percent.

Who else is ready to retire?

Decriminalized and De-stigmatized

Today’s generation of 30 to 40-year-olds is the first generation to be reasonably likely to get high with their parents.

That’s because their parents were 20–30 in the 1970s, so really, ‘nuff said there. Today’s adult is also more likely to be aware that their parents used to smoke weed when they were young. Or have a memory of a wacky aunt or family friend bringing some to a party. Or even — gasp- finding something in the house.

The point is that this was a generation whose parents didn’t really demonize cannabis. Whereas the generation before didn’t really smoke a lot of weed, and possibly got their facts from Reefer Madness.

This enlightened generation is now having kids of their own and passing the right type of knowledge on. This, along with legalization, is killing the stigma that’s gone with pot smoking for years. This won’t kill it completely, of course. Like with alcohol has teetotallers, there will always be staunch weedotallers, who just feel “drugs” are bad.

The good news is their numbers are dwindling.
