If you read my previous short article where i reclaimed an iPod Classic 30gb from the dark depths of the drawer, having seen i upload in Apple Lossless format and don’t use the supplied earbuds so how do i listen?
Everyday headphones are AKG Bluetooth foldables used wired with the iPod. These are fine for the money about £80 from Amazon and the iPod powers them easily, but i also have a pair of Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 which demand too much power so are unusable. So if i’m all about serious listening how do use my better phones. One answer could be to go the DIY route and build yourself a 9V ChuMoy headphone amp, which i have done and this takes the humble iPod to another level. These headamps were very popular a while ago and if you are interested this route is one i would recommend but with the advent of cheap items from China and the all consuming Amazon i think i have an alterative:
BTW i do not have any affiliation with either Amazon or Douk Audio and therefore earn no commission these links are for your info. I will write a bit more about this amp in another article.
But what about the iPod Classic+ i mentioned in the starting headline, well Apple made loads of iPod variants some of which contained the fabled Wolfenson DAC (Digital to Audio Convertor). This chip boasted a much improved sound quality and is found in the iPod Classic Video Models and the 5.5 version. The 5.5 version can be verified if your’e looking at an Ebay listing as they have a Search function at the bottom of the Music Window screen.
If you found any of this interesting or would like to know more about the items don’t hesitate to contact me. I should state i’m an ordinary guy and not a professional so always do your own research. Cheers.
