President’s Day Week

In an attempt to stay helpfully engaged without feeling the need to obsessively read the news, I’m writing my daily actions for the week all at once. Tuesday Jason Kander, the head of Let America Vote, recommends Senators reject Donald Trump’s new Labor nominee. His reasoning: Even though the federal government…

Diary of A West Virginia Democrat: Day 29—Friday, February 17th

Senate Democrats can’t vote with Trump. It just can’t happen. — I think my friends feel down today. I certainly do. I’m not sure why — it’s been a good week and Trump has been, in some important ways, slowed and stopped and there will be a Senate investigation into Flynn and his communications with Russia. But that’s not quite enough…

Day 28—Thursday, February 16th

I didn’t write a post yesterday; I went to a meeting of the 617 Forum, a nice group of folks who are trying to figure out how to make things better. It’s really good to have a local group. This weekend my local chapter of Indivisible is having a meeting…

Day 26—Tuesday, February 14th

Happy Valentine’s Day! Justin Trudeau shook Trump’s hand and the video is great. It’s a show of force by the Canadian — the US’s greatest defeat since the War of 1812 —and this analysis is the best thing that I’ve ever read. More good news: Michael Flynn is no longer…

Day 25—Monday, February 13th

Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Labor, Andy Puzder, is up for a vote this week. I’m going to call to ask my senators to reject his nomination. Here’s what I’m going to say: Hi, I’m [first name last name] and I’m calling to ask Senator [senator_name_2017] to oppose Andy Puzder’s nomination for Secretary of Labor. Americans need jobs, and Puzder’s enthusiasm for automation, combined with his opposition to the minimum wage, makes him a bad choice to help American works find jobs. Please ask President Trump to find a Secretary of Energy who will help American workers.

Day 24—Sunday, February 12th

With Trump’s Cabinet almost in place, I’m not sure what the best ways are to oppose the administration on a day to day basis. The protests and marches are good. But there’s still an incredible amount of bad stuff happening. Two quick actions: The expanded detentions and deportations happening now are really concerning. The Catholic diocese in San Francisco is hosting events last month and this month on how to deal with ICE and help other people deal with ICE. I’m looking for more events and other ways to help resist these deportations — whether by lobbying Congress to change the law or protesting to help more Americans see what’s happening.

Day 23—Saturday, February 11th

I’m still trying to figure out how to oppose the immigration raid sweeping the country. It seems probable that this is the start of mass deportations. It also seems reasonable to ask Congress to support an independent investigation into Trump’s Russia connections, particularly Gen. …

Day 22—Friday, February 10th

Immigration and Customs Enforcement seems to be focused on expanded deportations under Donald Trump’s executive order. Here’s an example of one woman who was deported and separated from her two children, both of whom are American citizens. DHS and ICE have not yet been open with the fact that they’re…

Day 21 — Thursday, February 9th

Today I was listening to Pod Save America and Jon Favreau didn’t know how long it’d been since the election and Dan Pfeiffer told him it’d be a month tomorrow, and then went on to explain how time slows down when people are experiencing trauma, which is why it seems…

Day 20 — Wednesday, February 8th

Tough day today. Jeff Sessions is going to do bad things for voting rights in the United States. And I’m going to donate to Jason Kander’s new organization, Let America Vote. They’ll be working to protect voting rights and fight voter suppression laws. They’re on Twitter as @Let_AmericaVote, which is probably the best way to find out more as they grow.
