No, Bloomberg, the Olympics didn’t stumble because of Millennials. It stumbled because of NBC.

You know how downloading mp3s and movies became super popular and the record companies were doing everything they could to stop it? Then Apple came out with songs for 99 cents each and a ton of people started buying music online. Why? Because it was way easier to go through Apple then to go through all the loopholes and legal risk involved with downloading for free.

NBC reports that millennials stayed away but a ton of them just used VPNs to access foreign streams. They know this too because they actively try to block any sites that show any coverage of the games that isn’t an NBC approved stream. A lot of people (including me) would rather just pay a flat fee for ad free live content online then jump through the hoops it takes to access a stream through VPN. People arguing that NBC shouldn’t give coverage away for free are missing the point completely. No one, including the author is saying that. We are saying they we want the option to PAY for the coverage we want. This is something that I know NBC is easily capable of doing because I can watch live stream of Wimbledon on NBC without a cable subscription.

If millennials are staying away from NBC it’s because we are getting tired of the way NBC is presenting the games and aren’t buying the excuses anymore. You don’t have to bid on the games anymore if that’s a problem for you NBC.
