Streaming Music is Ripping You Off

I find the ideas expressed in your piece very interesting and have surprisingly not heard much about click fraud. Why isn’t this discussed more between burgeoning artists and labels, or are instances of click fraud in streaming services relatively undocumented?

Although I appreciate the ‘Big Pool’ coup expressed in the concept of a “Silent September”; is there enough draw between artists, concerned listeners, and small labels to get the word out in enough time to make a genuine impact?

Wouldn’t a stronger statement among paying users be to pull their ‘vote’ all together and switch back to a free account allowing their click royalties to be paid by advertisers instead of their own bank accounts?

A sudden and dramatic loss of montly paid subscribers in September seems like a way bigger “fuck you” to the system than simply turning your volume down and draining your data plan to play right along with the scammers.

Either way, I whole-heartedly agree that we need to look at streaming services and royalty payouts as a whole; any artist (big or small) deserves to be paid fairly for their art.
