The European Green Deal is a comprehensive action plan adopted by the European Union (EU) on sustainability and combating climate change. It aims to tackle major challenges such as climate change, environmental pollution and resource depletion and steer Europe towards a sustainable future.

It was presented by the EU Commission in 2019 and endorsed by all EU Member States. Its main objective is to make Europe a climate-neutral continent by 2050 and to align economic growth with sustainability.

The main objectives of the European Green Deal include the following:

Climate Change and Energy Transition: The Compact aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and shift energy production towards clean and renewable sources. In this context, steps such as energy efficiency measures, increasing the use of renewable energy sources and reducing fossil fuels will be taken.

Sustainable Transport: The MoU includes important measures to make the transport sector sustainable. Steps such as expanding the use of electric vehicles, improving public transport systems and encouraging transport projects that reduce carbon emissions support the transition to a cleaner and environmentally friendly transport system.

Zero Pollution: The European Green Deal aims to reduce environmental pollution. Issues such as combating air and water pollution, waste management and transition to a circular economy are addressed within this framework. Promoting environmentally friendly production and consumption models is another important step to increase the efficiency of resource utilisation.

Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems: The Consensus aims to increase the sustainability of agriculture and food systems. Issues such as reducing the environmental impact of agriculture, promoting organic agriculture, sustainable water management and reducing food waste are the topics to be addressed to create a sustainable agriculture and food system.

Green Economy and Innovation: The European Green Deal aims to develop a green economy and promote innovative solutions. Developing sustainable technologies, creating green job opportunities and promoting sustainable investments will support Europe’s transformation into a competitive and environmentally friendly economy.

The European Green Deal is an important step for the EU to act decisively on sustainability and climate change. It involves a comprehensive transformation that requires policymakers, business, civil society and individuals to work together. All stakeholders need to co-operate and act decisively to build a sustainable future.

The European Green Deal emphasises the EU’s global leadership role and commitments for sustainable development. Its implementation will enable Europe to respond effectively to environmental challenges and lay a strong foundation for a sustainable future.
