What is Seliwanoff’s Test?

Seliwanoff’s test is like a special trick to tell the difference between two types of sugars, aldose and ketose.

Seliwanoff’s test is a chemical test used to distinguish between aldose and ketose sugars based on their reaction with a specific reagent. Here’s how it works:

1. Principle: Seliwanoff’s test relies on the ability of ketose sugars to undergo dehydration more rapidly than aldose sugars in the presence of a strong acid. This dehydration reaction produces a colored compound.
2. Reagent: The reagent used in Seliwanoff’s test is a solution of resorcinol in concentrated hydrochloric acid.
3. Procedure: To perform the test, the sugar solution is mixed with the Seliwanoff’s reagent and then heated. If a ketose sugar is present, it rapidly dehydrates to form a compound that reacts with resorcinol to produce a pink to red color. Aldose sugars either do not react or react much more slowly, resulting in little to no color change.
4. Interpretation: The appearance of a pink to red color indicates the presence of a ketose sugar, while the absence of color change suggests the presence of an aldose sugar.

Seliwanoff’s test is commonly used in biochemical laboratories for qualitative analysis of carbohydrates, helping to identify the types of sugars present in a given solution.

Example: Let’s say we have two sugars, glucose (aldose) and fructose (ketose). When we do the Seliwanoff’s test, glucose (slow walker) doesn’t change much, but fructose (fast runner) quickly turns pink or red, showing it’s a ketose sugar!
