One of the worst things to do in a university lecture is to pretend you know something when you don’t! In my opinion, honesty is the best policy. If I don’t know the answer I say something like, “ wow that’s an interesting question and you know what, I don’t know the answer. Let’s both go away and see what we can find”. I don’t feel insecure in my teaching when I don’t know something. How is it possible anyway for one person to know everything? I love that I don’t know all the answers and that students are thinking about things in a way that I haven’t. These moments become learning opportunities for me and the students when you FOLLOW UP and FEEDBACK. Not knowing something is a great teaching tool.
