Apparently the initial patent application by Charles Hall for the waterbed was denied as being too broad, as the device itself had been described by the great science fiction author, Robert A. Heinlein, so well in several of his novels that had been published more than 25 years prior to Hall trying to make one. Hall was later granted a patent when he modified and specified his design.
