How I Run a Daily Scrum

Due to the rise in virtual teams and workflow management software like Slack, Asana and Trello, a lot of people have scrum on the tips of their tongues now. However, many are practicing it wrong which is a bad thing because scrum can truly revolutionize your industry. I am a certified scrum master (CSM) with over ten years’ scrum experience who is giving you insight behind how to run a daily scrum and the role of the scrummaster.
First, I am going to start off with a definition. The Scrum Guide defines the daily scrum as ‘ a meeting that’s held at the same time and place each day to reduce complexity.’ The key phrase is reduce complexity because scrum thrives on simplicity. Simplicity is the reason why scrum was created. People over processes is one of the Agile principles. Scrum, a subset of agile, adheres to this.
Second, during a daily scrum, each member of the development team answers these three questions:
- What did I do yesterday that helped the development team meet the Sprint Goal?
- What will I do today to help the development team meet the Sprint Goal?
- Do I see any impediment that prevents me or the Development Team from meeting the Spring Goal?
Third, the role of the scrum master is to run the daily scrum but also remove any impediment that the Development Team faces. Remember, being the scrum master means being the servant leader. You are supposed to ensure that the Development Team has all of the resources necessary to complete the Increment and fulfill its definition of done during each sprint. As a certified scrum master, I take pride in knowing that I remove the impediments, barriers and roadblocks to make sure that the Development Team is successful each and every sprint.
