By 2020, computing power that is equivalent to human brain (10 quatrillion cps-cycle per second) will cost less than $1000, that is 500X the compute power for the same price today. This acceleration of computing speed will accelerate General AI(conscious self-aware AI)’s self learning, so not only will it make AI smarter than human, the gap will be widened faster and faster as well, to a point that we can no longer communicate — it will be like ants and human(we are the ants !), and we call that the Singularity.

So is there a path for human to stay as the dominant species on earth, there is a hypothetical, and it has to do with nanotechnology and internet. The idea is to integrate neural chip in human via nanotechnology, thanks to the accelerating compute power in smaller chip, it will be nano size so we don’t need to put hole in the back of our head. We will “live in the internet” and have the entire knowledge base and computing power of it. This is a way to “upgrade” the slow evolving human and it needs to be done before Singularity arrives.

This approach is generally known as Transhumanism. Medical field has made the most stripe so far, IBM developed a chip call the TrueNorth that could implant in brain and monitor seizure.

This approach not only makes our brain smarter and faster, it can also upgrade our eyes and ears as well. VR, for example, will no longer be a helmet. It will be a pair of contact lens or even smaller but powerful chip in our eyes or nerves, and it can be turned on and off at will.

Like any scifi fiction, I have no doubt human will at last prevail :) “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” — Charles Darwin
