This Is It: Why Houston Will Always Be Home

6 min readApr 8, 2025
Houston, Texas

I’ve lived in Houston since 1994. That’s more than enough time to know this city didn’t just give me an address — it gave me an identity. Jacksonville? Jacksonville raised me. It’s my soil, my start. It gave me grit. But Houston? Houston gave me wings.

I’ve been blessed to call a lot of places home — Memphis, San Diego, Queens, and even overseas in Japan (in places like Sasebo and Yokosuka). Each one added something to the man I’ve become. But none of them defined my being the way Houston has.

This city doesn’t just live — it moves. It breathes. It builds people. With nearly 600 square miles of hustle and heart, Houston is bigger than New York City, Boston, and San Francisco combined. But it’s not just about size. It’s about substance. It’s about how this city welcomes you, tests you, and teaches you to rise.

It gets better, and just know, I’m about to give you all this history today, so you can understand why I love H-town!

Over 2.3 million strong, Houston is the fourth-largest city in the country, and it wears that title with pride. We’re more than numbers — we’re a blend of stories. More than 145 languages echo through our streets. That’s not just diversity, it’s a living, breathing reminder that greatness doesn’t look, sound, or speak just one way.
