“What do you do for a living?”
“What do you do for a living?” When meeting someone for the first time, that was probably the most terrifying question to answer since I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life at the “tender age” of 30. I had a great paying job in corporate America, with scheduled breaks, scheduled sick days and great benefits and although for some this represents the so-called American Dream, for me, it was a nightmare I couldn’t wait to wake up from.
I realized I was definitely not alone but continued to struggle on how to make “what I do for a living” have a deeper meaning. All of the sudden I was asking myself questions like: “Am I wasting my time trying to climb the corporate ladder?”, “Once on top, will I truly be happy?” “Is it too late to start over?”
Let me tell you something, uncertainty is scary, but it is one of the greatest motivators one could use to change and improve one’s own path to success. So I decided to start over and direct all my energy into finding what truly makes me happy. I quit my corporate job to find and tell a worthy story. I left a “sure thing” to pursue, inspire, create and be part of something bigger than I could imagine.
Everyone has got a story to tell; we all have a vision, a voice and we should all have a medium (pun very well intended) to express all of our ideas, dreams and thoughts. I am still working on my story, as I am sure this journey is just getting started but the question “What do you for a living?” is no longer scary. It is just an inspiring reminder of where I am headed.
