The Time Adds Up

It really does. The more you write and accumulate the better you become. Words feed off of each other.

Reading is the other side of the equation.

In his memoir On Writing, Stephen King recommends that writers pull the TV’s plug from the wall. This advice, while difficult, should now include social media and news sites — looking at you, Reddit.

Doubt comes with the territory of writing fiction. We compare ourselves with authors who inspire us. How can we not come up short? We are setting ourselves up for failure.

But we have to push through. Our skills are our skills, and no matter how hard we beat our heads against our desks progress will be achieved at its own pace.

Have any doubts? Look at your writing from five years ago. The progression will be obvious. If you can’t find any writing from five years ago, better start now.
