America: A Halloween Story

Today George W. Bush, a man considered by a large percentage of historians to be either the worst President in modern history, or in all of American history (the last time the poll was taken, of course) said the following:

“Bigotry seems emboldened. Our politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication,”

“When we lose sight of our ideals, it is not democracy that has failed. It is the failure of those charged with protecting and defending democracy,” he said, adding later: “We need to recall and recover our own identity. Americans have great advantage. To renew our country, we only need to remember our values.”

My point? It seems to me we are in the darkest period of America that I’ve ever lived through. I hope it does not get darker. I hope that we hear more words like this from our leaders. I hope that our society heals it’s divisions and starts to unify again under some commonality that honors our individualism without igniting the partisanship and anger we all feel to the ‘other side’ of the aisle.

Think of it like this: we are stuck together in this raft called America, and our ‘Captain’ is quite possibly the Worst American Ever. Incompetent, narcissistic, conspiratorial, racist, vindictive, unenlightened, incurious, poorly read, unsympathetic, ignorant, aggressive, and a sexual predator to boot. Oh, and he’s quite possibly a traitor, of course. He is dismantling good work like the Iran Nuclear Deal simply because he wants to destroy what the black guy did. He is sabotaging our health care system for the same reason. He is failing the dying and sick American citizens in Puerto Rico. He is disrespecting fallen soldiers and their families. He threatens the First Amendment itself with threats against broadcasters.

And all of this in the last two weeks.

So as Halloween approaches, I ghoulishly invite you to look at the walls of the dark tunnel we are in…notice that the light behind us grows dim, and the tunnel ahead is pitch black. And if that imagery doesn’t work for you, here’s something you can do right now…and listen to your body when you do it:

Imagine that George W. Bush is President again.

How did your body feel? Maybe you felt a little pukey, but didn’t you also feel a sense of instant relief? A sense that someone at least sane and occasionally competent was in the White House? Did you feel like you might sleep better tonight? Like you wouldn’t have to brace yourself every time you opened your phone to the news? Like the future wouldn’t be COMPLETELY fucked up and we might have a chance against China and Russia and the incoming Baby Boomer aging crisis? Well, I certainly do. It feels like a warm blanket of relief.

And this is the man who started two wars, spent trillions of dollars that could have educated an entire generation at home, failed the people of Louisiana, set stem cell research back 10 years causing untold suffering, and sunk the entire economy.

That’s how far down the tunnel we are, folks. We would actually be relieved to have George W Fucking Bush as our Captain again.

Happy Halloween. Hang in there peeps. We’ll get through this.
