Social Media Digest on IGTV

This article by Social Media Today discusses the launch of Instagram’s new IGTV, a streaming feature on the free social app where users can post up to 60 minutes of video. The article states that “This is a potential game changer for content creators who specialize in longer form videos. It’s essentially a very similar platform to YouTube, except for those content creators on Instagram already have their targeted audience (their followers), so it allows for a more direct approach to uploading and sharing video content. Instagram’s own blog announcement stated that the new IGTV simple and intuitive, while already curated to those you engage with the most on your Instagram feed. Some of the ideas listed in this article include using IGTV for Q&A’s, product demonstrations and reviews, and webinars, which provide mass amounts of new opportunities for brands on social media to reach their audience from a different approach.
As for whether or not IGTV is actually going to become extremely successful or if it’s going to fade out as some “fads” simply do not work out, that’s out of my reach of prediction, but I do think it has a lot of interesting things to offer to content creators and brands on social media. In comparing the common ground between IGTV and YouTube, they both serve as a platform for longer form videos, but it could make a vast difference in that Instagram could now serve as a place to go for its traditional media in the form of a feed of posts and a section for “stories,” which are shorter, temporary posts, as well as a video streaming platform in which you already have inherent access to your favorite creator/brand’s videos. It essentially has endless opportunity for brands and creators on social media to create a tighter brand and a bigger audience with more engagement through putting all of these “services” onto one (already hugely successful) platform.
