Whenever the majority of the items on a registry are too expensive, but the cheap items are too cheap, I try to buy a few cheap ones around a theme and package them nicely. So a set of kitchen utensils, or an ice cream scoop with a set of hand towels, or place mats and napkin rings. I think it’s definitely best to buy off the registry and if you can’t then do a gift card to the place where the couple is registered so they can buy the remaining stuff at the discount that most store offer.
