Acromegaly is one of those conditions that we don’t encounter all that often, but when we do it’s usually because the client has discovered that their condition may have a negative effect on their life insurance application.

For this reason…

We wanted to take a moment and briefly discuss how we try to help those who have been diagnosed with acromegaly get approved for a great life insurance policy as well as discuss some of the factors that will come into play during the underwriting of their life insurance application. With that said, let’s first start off by defining exactly what acromegaly is.

Acromegaly defined:

Acromegaly is a medical condition that is defined by the overproduction of growth hormone by the pituitary gland which can lead to an abnormal growth of the hands, feet, and face.

Common symptoms associated with acromegaly will typically include:

  • Enlarged bones in the face often leading to a pronounce brow.
  • Enlarged bones in both the feet and hands.
  • Excessive hair growth in women.
  • Swollen and painful joints making it difficult to walk and perform daily activities.
  • As well as excessive growth spurts.

Treatments for acromegaly…

Will focus on trying to restore normal pituitary gland functioning and may require the removal of any potential pituitary tumors (benign), radiation therapy and the use of prescription medication designed to reduce the effectiveness of growth hormones being released by the effected hyperactive pituitary gland.

Where we will often run into trouble…

During a life insurance application is when acromegaly is left untreated. This is because, untreated acromegaly can in addition to the typical symptoms of acromegaly also worsen the effects of diabetes (if present) as well as also increase one’s hypertension levels (if present) as well.

This is why…

When it comes time to trying to determine what type of life insurance policy someone with acromegaly can qualify for and at what rate class, as a life insurance agent/agency, just knowing you have acromegaly isn’t going to be enough. Additional factors such as:

  • What’s causing your acromegaly?
  • What is your current treatment plan?
  • When were you first diagnosed with acromegaly? Pre/post puberty?
  • How long have you been treating your acromegaly?
  • Do you have any other pre-existing medical conditions?
  • Have you been diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension?
  • Etc, etc…

From here with these answers in hand, we’ll often be able to get a general idea about what types of life insurance you’ll be eligible for as well as what rate class you may or may not be able to qualify for.

You see…

Acromegaly is one of those conditions where it’s either going to play a very insignificant role in the outcome of your life insurance application, or it’s going to be the MOST important factor in your outcome. Typically how well your condition is being managed will generally make this determination.

But its…

Also, important to understand not all life insurance companies and/or life insurance policies are going to treat those with acromegaly the same. This is why it’s so important to get a complete picture of an applicant’s overall health so that when it comes time to actually apply for a life insurance policy, you’re doing so based on a wider range of characteristics not just one major medical condition.

It’s also important to weigh you options early on during the application process and perhaps “test” the underwriting guidelines of several different insurance companies by having a “preliminary” review of your application by an underwriter before actually APPLYING for coverage. This way you can get a general “idea” about how an individual life insurance company may view your completed application prior to actually submitting one.

The good news for you is that because TermLife2Go works with dozens of different insurance companies, this is something that we can do for you without having to completed dozens of different life insurance applications and is just one of many advantages you’ll receive by working with us!

We here at TermLife2Go would also like to point out how important it is for someone who has a pre-existing medical condition to take their time when looking for that “perfect” life insurance policy.

This is because, often times, once someone with a condition like acromegaly finds coverage, they are sometimes so happy that they’ve been approved that they’ll fail to do some comparison shopping.

In fact, depending on just how much life insurance coverage you’re looking for, it’s conceivable that we might actually have a policy that you’ll be able to qualify for that won’t require that you take a medical exam or answer any health related questions! If this is something you might be interested in, we would highly suggest that you take a look our our Best No Medical Exam Life Insurance article which focuses on companies that won’t require a medical exam but will ask medical questions, or our Best Final Expense Life Insurance which will focus on companies that won’t require a medical exam or any health related questions.
