As a woman working in the tech industry, I often see a revolving circle effect of mainly men rewarding typical “masculine” behaviors and personalities, such as ruthless ambition and aggression, while devaluing more “feminine” business qualities, such as teamwork, communication and mentoring. When a woman is hired into a tech position, she may bring both “masculine” and “feminine” work skills, but will quickly realize her “feminine” work skills are much less appreciated and rewarded. She will either convert or withdraw and/or drop out. This helps further perpetuate the cycle. So, yes, like the author says “We can shape up and shut up or take a hike” or …we could hire more women and slowly mix the waters up with other equally ( and sometimes more) valuable work skills, creating a more welcoming environment where more women, who are just as technically qualified as men, can feel valued and appreciated.
