I was having coffee with a group of friends the other day. Most of us are post-menopausal but one poor soul is still sitting in the eye of that particular storm. After a here’s-where-my-life-has-gone-to-hell-this-week update, she announced that to add insult to injury, her husband was recently told that he is also going through the menopause by his GP.

How we laughed. Even she perked up in the middle of her hot flush. But, then she leaned in and said — “It’s true. It’s a thing. It’s real. It’s called the andropause.”

Colour us gobsmacked.

We all know the mid-life crisis men jokes. Dressing like a 30-year-old in clothes so tight they can’t sit down, drinking kale smoothies so fast they throw them back up again, going to the gym to pull a muscle, and buying a motorbike that gives them saddle sores that make them walk like John Wayne.

But, this isn’t what she was talking about. Turns out she was right — the male menopause really is a thing. Kind of. It’s not the same as the female menopause — your beloved other half is not trying to steal your thunder and outdo your physical and psychological misery; however, they could be suffering too at…
