Meet the Chief Mouser of The Cabinet Office — Larry the cat

Meet Larry, the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office. He lives in 10 Downing Street.

He doesn’t belong to any Prime Minister. He lives in the building, no matter who’s in charge. He’s outlasted five PMs including Liz Truss who might not even have met him because she didn’t last that long.

Cats have been around government since the days of Cardinal Wolsey in the 1500s. Latterly, they live in Downing Street to help keep the building rodent-free.

Larry is allegedly not good at this. It’s rumoured that he once watched a mouse run around a room while the PM lost their temper because Larry wasn’t doing his job.

But, he makes us all smile when he sits outside the door of Number 10 and waits for a police officer to let him in. Larry knows who’s really in charge.
