Visual Note-taking: not as easy as it seems

As I read the prompt for the visual sketching exercise I thought “this is easy enough”…famous last words. An hour later and after watching the 13-minute video about 6 times, I came up with the third version of my visual notes (see above). Based on my first attempt, I was quite proud of myself. Until I saw another classmate’s sketch and surprised even myself when I blurted “oh, c’mon!” out loud. She’s obviously an artist and I should not compare. Right?

I definitely believe the more you practice, the more your visual sketching skills will improve. Since it was my first try, I did feel pressure, but after a while I liked the challenge of trying to figure out how to depict a certain sentence or idea. I don’t think the point of visual note-taking is to challenge you, but sketching is not something I normally do. Since I had to re-watch the video several times to pick key words I could draw I did become engaged in what the speaker was saying and perhaps better retained the information.
