new york old art

Last month, I paid a visit to the Greater New York show at MoMa PS 1. I actually didn’t pay. so i guess I freed a visit…anyway. It was medium, meaning not great but also not bad. Kinda like meh. I can’t fairly review this because I don’t have the proper notes but it got me thinking on a bigger, broader issue (no, not big butttzzzz) and that is, is New York really old?….ok, yea I know, I know, duh carolina nyc is as old as the rest of the northeast kinda mayflower type shit, ok, but I mean has New York outgrown its inspiration for artists (once again being broad so this goes for artists, musicians, pottery makers, basically any sort of deliberate creative process)? The answer is obvious, mainly yes. Rent is sky high, all creative markets are overly saturated, and all the so-cool bars that were around in the 80s have shut down. BUT. (butts) New York City has always embraced the cycle of creating newness by gentrifying neighborhoods, naturally draws the rich to its social epicenters, and lets face it, even when that loft in soho was $400 dollars a month, that was a BUTTload to the artist back then.

All I mean by this is it may not have anything to do with good ole New York but our new media saturated brains. It takes us more to be morreee creative, we take from other ideas (age old tradition what up classical composers), and quite frankly we get LAZY AF. This goes for creative and non-creative types but it shows up more obviously in the creative world. I think its time for us to embrace new ways of thinking and stop finding scapegoats for why we feel less inspired or why that art show was soooo mehh he he where’s wine. Connect to yourself, be weird when you want to be, research weird ass stuff (DID YOU KNOW THE MIDDLE FINGER IS CONNECTED TO THE PLANET SATURN–WHAT?) and make stuff cuz you want to, not because its supposed to be epic or beautiful.

IDK, I love NYC and I also really don’t. but I think its what I make it. So I am gonna embrace the old, the expensive gentrification cuz sorry not sorry i love nice drinks, and make my own inspiration that hopefully inspires those around me.

I guess I am encouraging you all to not dwell in dull but lift up in light, fun, bright stuff. Our time is limited in whatever city you may be. live happy. Drop the age old story. (But omg carolina how cuz like i can’t stop thinking about how I’m gonna pay my bills, be picasso, etc etc…….I will tell you how dear artist (not artist/person/alien?), take a book from your shelf (i hope you have books), now hold it in your hand over a cleared space in your room, preferably with a rug on it, ok now drop it. like let it fall from your hands. Cool. That’s the same thing you gotta do. It’s actually easy, you just have to do it.

Now I dare you to look around any neighborhood in this good old city and get inspired be it by trash, outfits, or fancy drinks. If that doesn’t work maybe you can find some aliens to hang with. call me, maybe.
