How to be Happy no Matter the Results of the U.S. Midterms

Not another political rant…

You cannot be happy if your happiness depends on the results of U.S. midterm elections. Whether you are Democrat or Republican, Independent or Amphibian, life is bigger than what happens on November 6th, 2018.

I write this article because—I’ll be honest — I’m a news junkie. Or, maybe more appropriate, I’m a reformed news junkie.

But I’m also a human being who knows, deep down, whether things go the way I hope or not, the world will not end. There are still bright spots.

Bright spots? Really?

Maybe you think I’m ignoring the occupier in the Oval Office who has the codes for the U.S. nuclear arsenal. I assure you, as much as I would like to ignore him, I am not.

Maybe you think I’m missing the development of an increasingly hostile Iran. Or the provocations for that. Again, nada.

Perhaps you think I’ve forgotten about all the problems of healthcare in the U.S. Or homelessness. Or the opioid epidemic. Or the sending of U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to counter “the caravan.” No, no and no.

Or maybe you think I didn’t catch the recent violence in a Pittsburg synagogue or a yoga studio in Tallahassee, Florida. (I mean, go figure!) No, got that. And yes, my heart hurts every time such inhumane incidents happen. Every time.

But I contend this: For all the incivility and violence erupting in the world — not just in the U.S., but all over—there is still a glimmer of hope. (Likely much more than you think.)

And yes. You should vote. Do it! If you’re a U.S. citizen, take charge of your future. But don’t let your happiness, your joy, be a victim of whatever goes right — or left — in these elections.

What got me thinking about this

I googled “How to be happy no matter the results of the U.S. midterms” and got nothing. No advice. Not a smidge.

That made me realize, I need to write the article. (Hey, next time I google it, it should be there, right?)

I think what Americans (and the world) need more than anything in these divisive, polarizing times is JOY. LOVE. And HOPE.

And yes, in case you missed it, we’re in November. It’s not all about U.S. midterm elections. We are in the season of hope. Of gratitude and wonder. (And it shouldn’t simply be a season.)

So what a time to make this bold statement:

Why can I claim this?

1 I am writing this article. It may even get to a few readers. I can write. I can express my thoughts. And I can send it out to the world. Just how cool is that?

2 You are reading this article. Seems simple, right? But not everyone can do that. You can read. And you have the freedom to read. You can think, feel, express and breathe. Isn’t that a miracle? Does it not fill you with gratitude and wonder (if you really pause and think about it)?

And, the most significant:

3 You are alive! Right now. In this time and place. With all the drama, craziness, noise, vitriol and anger, breath still resides in your lungs. And love can still occupy the primary seat in your heart, if you let it.

And because you’re here, you have a purpose. Seek out that purpose. Be the healing balm your family needs. Your community needs. Your country needs. And, without question, our world needs.

It’ll be okay. No matter what.
