Hair Falling Flat? It May be Time to Switch Your Part
Every so often, my hair just stops cooperating with me. My roots are flat, the ends are poufy, and overall it just doesn’t do me any favors. Once a week, I take my trusted Kenra Clarifying Shampoo to remove gunk and build up. This adds volume and a much needed refresh but sometimes I need a more significant solution.
A fix many women may overlook is a simple one- change your part. The way we part our hair becomes part of our identity, so after months or years of having the same routine, it is not always the obvious choice.
So what can simply changing your part do? Experts at Madison Reed say it can actually improve your hair’s health.
“Changing your part actually makes your hair healthier. Fact is, the longer you wear the same part, the more your hair gets weighed down on one side, causing the roots to get weaker in that area, leading to breakage” (Murdock, 2017).
If you think about what your hair goes through on a daily basis, we are constantly styling and applying heat to the same top and front pieces of hair. No wonder they become brittle and lifeless overtime. I recommend switching your part every three months or so to prevent this from happening. It can be scary to think of transitioning from a side part to a middle part or from the left to right side, but it becomes natural when the cycle becomes more routine.
So should you take your dry hair and flip it over any which way? Not unless you want to resemble a founding father… Instead, when your hair is wet, take a comb with a tapered end and trace out your new part. Blow dry and style as normal, focusing on creating smooth bouncy ends. This will ensure your new part isn’t unnaturally lifted. For extra TLC, once a week apply copious amounts of a good quality castor oil to your scalp (or the ever popular Olaplex bonding oil) and sleep with it saturated from root to ends. Sleep on a satin pillowcase and follow with a clarifying shampoo the next morning- thank me later.
Enjoy your refreshed look and a fresh, subtle change.
